After all, these dealers saw her every two weeks for two years. And if she still didn’t know how to play, it might be reasonable for them to question her intelligence. I begged her to let me continue to “instruct” her when we played. I believed that a man teaching his wife or girlfriend at the table was not a threatening situation to the casino and that our longevity would likely be enhanced if we did this. If we both looked like we knew what we were doing, we might not be able to play as long. She ultimately allowed it, but she wasn’t happy.

Blackjack Insurance

Ginny was partially appeased when we decided that she would keep the insurance count. An insurance count merely subtracts 2 for every 10-valued card (the l0s, jacks, queens, and kings) and adds 1 for every other card in the deck. If you’re playing a double- deck game, and the count is ÷8 or higher when the dealer asks if you want insurance, you take it. If it isn’t, you don’t. The card- counting system I used valued 4s, 5s, and 6s differently from 8s and 9s. This made it very useful for betting and playing decisions, but only approximate for insurance purposes. The count Ginny used was 100% accurate for this one decision only, and her being involved in the decision making every one-out-of-thirteen hands (whenever the dealer’s up-card was an ace) helped keep her happy.
At the Riv we used a small bet spread. Since we were playing either $5 or $10 a hand and didn’t spread our bets, we were under their “looking-for-card-counters” radar. We also used a lot of coupons. At that time, the Riv gave away yellow coupon books with a $7-for-$5 and a $3-for-$2 coupon and some chips, plus many other coupons. It was easy to get these coupon books by the dozen. Although each coupon was stamped “one per day,” we found that we could use them “one per dealer per day.” The Riv had a rotation system that kept new dealers coming every 40 minutes and never the same one twice. So during four hours of play, we would each use 6 sets of coupons per day. This had an expected value of maybe $10 per person per day (we only used the coupons when the count was positive), so it added up. With a daily subsidy of $60 apiece, having an extra $10 was a significant raise.
Some of the dealers made wisecracks about our frequent use of the coupons. It didn’t bother me at all, but it humiliated Ginnie. She cared a lot more about what people thought about her. I cared about getting the money.
