Triple Play Machine

Most local casinos in Las Vegas installed dollar 10/7 Triple Play machines. These Online Casino machines take three times as many coins to play as single-line dollar machines, but less than twice as much bankroll. You can also get about twice the dollar action on a dollar Triple Play than on a dollar single-line. The reason it’s not three times as much is that it takes more time for three hands to be dealt out. Also, there’s the W-2G effect. Royals show up more frequently and being dealt quad 2s, 3s, 4s, or As (about a cumulative 1-in-13,500 chance) also leads to a W-2G on Double Bonus or Double-Double Bonus games. When you’re dealt three aces, it’s possible to turn them into quad aces twice (at $800 each) for another W-2G, but that’s even less common than being dealt one of these quads.

Action Junkies

“Action” is a word that describes the amount of Money put into play. “Action junkies,” who get a huge thrill from gambling, want to get as much money into action as they possibly can. So do advantage players. If I have a half-percent advantage, it’s worth $15 per hour on a dollar single-line machine and $30 per hour on a dollar Triple Play machine; I can get twice as many dollars through the latter. If you can afford the swings, it’s natural to gravitate toward these machines, especially if it’s combined with a valuable promotion.
And gravitate we did. When the Orleans or Gold Coast offered triple slot club points, you couldn’t get near these machines. All seats were occupied, with players standing around waiting for one to open up. It took a year or so for the casinos to conclude that if so many players were competing to play the same Casino game, they might not be making money on them.
Eventually, casinos began removing dollar 10/7 Double Bonus from their Triple Play machines. Station Casinos removed it a month or two after the Triple Play games were first installed. Casinos known for loose machines—such as the Orleans, Gold Coast, Arizona Charlie’s, and the Reserve (now Fiesta Henderson)—took considerably longer to make the move. The last to go were those at the Santa Fe and the Fiesta; these casinos kept them until both were sold to Station Casinos. Now these same casinos offer 9/7 Double Bonus on dollar Triple Play machines and there’s no problem finding a seat.

Promotions

You still come across occasional quarter 10/7 Triple Plays around town and these might survive. The $30-per-hour promotions on dollar Triple Play become $8-per-hour promotions on quarter Triple Play—not as worrisome for the casinos. This hourly wage does attract some players, and some decent ones at that, but it also draws a lot of mediocre players. The video poker promotions have been juicy enough over the past 10 years to allow many players with even modest abilities to move up in denomination. But not all. Some first-rate players still, for a variety of reasons, choose to play quarters. On average, though, the players who fired up the dollar 10/7 Double Bonus Triple Plays a few years ago were considerably stronger than those who feed quarter Triple Plays today.
The second-best game found on the first-generation Triple Play machines was NSU (“Not So Ugly”) Deuces, returning 99.73%. With the right slot club and promotion, this too can be a good game. Third-generation Triple Play machines had games such as Super Aces Bonus that had high returns and the good players figured them out before the casinos did. Most of the good schedules for these games no longer exist.
